Delay prison, says DOC chief

FLORIDA - The head of the state Department of Corrections proposed Thursday that construction of the Suwannee Correctional Institution be delayed for at least two years as part of a cost-saving measure to help make up a $1 billion state budget shortfall.

The measure was not among budget-reduction proposals submitted by Gov. Charlie Crist on Friday to the legislature, however, and seems unlikely to gain traction in Tallahassee.

"It's not likely at all" that the prison will be delayed, Sen. Charlie Dean (R-Inverness) said Monday. Read more.
