FIJI - Prisons Commissioner Brigadier Ioane Naivalurua has made several changes to the Prisons Department and organised a three-day conference this week to thrash out issues that concern the institution. Verenaisi Raicola speaks to him about more changes he hopes to achieve. Times: What are the 11 issues you will talk about at this Commissioner's conference over these three days and what do you hope to achieve? Mr Naivalurua: We will discuss alternative sentence process for young offenders, evidence that rehabilitation works, human rights issues, situational analysis report on HIV/AIDS in prison, roles of prison fellowship, budget, promoting quality training for officers, impact of poverty on crime, OHS, community corrections and roles of Fijian Affairs in integrating offenders into the community.
