A South Woods Prison inmate's suicide attempt was foiled on Sunday morning, according to the N.J. Department of Corrections. DOC spokesman Matt Schuman said that George Martinez, 24, attempted to slash both his throat and wrist with an unspecified instrument shortly after 9 a.m. Martinez was taken by helicopter to Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries and released back to prison the same day. Schuman said the incident remains under investigation. Martinez was incarcerated at South Woods in January, 2000 for aggravated assault and illegal possession of a firearm, and is currently serving a mandatory minimum term of nearly 7 years. He was eligible for parole in April, 2006. |
