An inmate at Pennsylvania's State Correctional Institution-Somerset was charged Sunday with strangling his cellmate, state police said. Steven G. Ramidial, who turned 27 on Sunday, was charged with homicide, aggravated assault and simple assault in the death early Saturday of Jose L. Collazo, 51, of York. Collazo was pronounced dead Saturday at 6:36 a.m., about two hours after a officer at the medium-security prison 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh heard a noise and allegedly found Collazo being choked by Ramidial. Prison officials removed Ramidial from the cell but couldn't revive Collazo, police said. Ramidial is from Philadelphia, but state police wouldn't say why he was incarcerated. Collazo was serving a sentence for indecent assault and was designated a sexual predator under Megan's Law after he was convicted of sexually molesting a preteen girl three times between August 1996 and January 1997. Ramidial was returned to the prison after he was arraigned Sunday. It was not immediately clear whether he had an attorney. He next faces a preliminary hearing before District Justice Douglas M. Bell, but no date was immediately available. |
