FIJI - A magistrate believes community corrections could reduce social problems created by sending people to prison. This is because offenders could serve their sentences in the community, maintain employment, education, family and community links while having access to rehabilitation programs at the same time. Ba Magistrate Salote Kaimacuata who is part of a pilot project on Community Corrections said those sent to jail for breaking the law could still be given another chance to reform instead of confining them in prison where they ended up re-offending because of the lack of care from home and the community they belonged to.
