NEW ZEALAND - The doors open today on the country's newest prison, the 650-bed $380.3 million Spring Hill corrections facility near Hampton Downs, north of Huntly. Prime Minister Helen Clark was scheduled to open the prison, along with Corrections Minister Damien O'Connor and Tainui MP Nanaia Mahuta. The new-look campus-style prison took more than two years to build and will house inmates who have committed a wide range of offences. It includes an on-site gymnasium, central rugby field, as well as a wharenui (meeting house) and a fale (building for inmates with Pacific Island heritage). Spring Hill occupies a 20.4ha site and has a 1.8km perimeter fence that is 8m high. The first prisoners will be moved to Spring Hill from November and the prison should be running at capacity by June next year. It will employ about 280 people when it becomes fully operational. |
