| Civilian officers could cut costs |

IOWA - Polk County taxpayers would save roughly $372,000 a year if sheriff's deputies at the new jail were replaced with lower-paid civilian officers, officials were told Thursday. Former Chief Deputy Bill Vaughn, a consultant hired to help supervisors control costs on the $68 million jail, which is still under construction, got permission to work with Sheriff Dennis Anderson and others on a plan to overhaul how the jail is staffed.
