UK prison population hits record high

UNITED KINGDOM - The number of prisoners in England and Wales has hit a record high, the Ministry of Justice has confirmed.

A total of 81,135 people are being held in prisons and in cells in police stations, a spokeswoman for the department said. She said this breaks down to 80,803 being held in prisons and 332 in police cells, otherwise known as "safe guard". Read more.
