ALABAMA - Alabamians have been hearing for years about the severe overcrowding of the state's prison system, an ongoing problem that has multiple components, few of which have been satisfactorily addressed. The result is a prison population that exceeds 29,000 inmates in a system with facilities designed for less than half that many. There is a more encouraging bit of news about the problem, however. The sentencing guidelines adopted by the Legislature last year show some real potential for curbing the growth in the prison population. Read more.
