Fights bring California Men's Colony lockdown
By The San Luis Obispo Tribune
Published: 03/15/2004

Two fights two weeks ago involving dozens of California Men's Colony inmates resulted in a lockdown of two sections of the prison.
Many of the inmates suffered minor injuries, including cuts, bumps and bruises, said Lt. Shelly Thompson, but no staff members were hurt. Both fights involved whites and Hispanics, she said, but prison officials had not concluded whether the incidents were racially motivated.
The first fight broke out about 1:20 p.m. March 3 in the eastern wing of the facility. Staff locked up about 70 inmates, Thompson said, and prepared to reopen that section of the prison the next day. The A quad, where the fight occurred, remained closed the next evening.
The second fight happened around 7:50 a.m. March 4 in Unit 4 of the prison's western wing. About 40 inmates were involved, Thompson said. Officials monitored inmate movement that night but had not reopened the area where the fight took place.
