Jay O'Neil was three years into a prison sentence and just months away from freedom when he tried to escape from the grounds of Bayside State Prison in New Jersey, authorities said. Now the 42-year-old inmate could end up spending his next three birthdays behind bars, too. O'Neil, a prisoner at the minimum-security unit's farm, was discovered missing during a headcount around 7:30 p.m. March 6, state Department of Corrections spokesman Matt Schuman said. A full-scale search began immediately, and officials found O'Neil at about 11 p.m. -- along Route 47 on the prison grounds, about 1 1/2 miles from the farm where he escaped, Schuman said. A K-9 unit belonging to the DOC picked up O'Neil's scent and helped lead officials to the escapee. O'Neil, who began his prison term in February 2001 at Bayside, was serving sentences for aggravated assault and a weapons violation on convictions from Atlantic County. His release date was scheduled for no later than November 2004, according to DOC records. Now, however, officials could tack on an extra three years to his sentence, Schuman said. |
