Four Florida corrections officers were arrested March 5 on charges they took bribes from undercover agents to give prisoners contraband such as food, clothing, jewelry and even a cell phone. The officers worked at the South Florida Reception Center in Miami or at the Dade Correctional Institution in Florida City, according to arrest reports from Miami-Dade County police. From October until this week, the officers accepted up to $200 for each time they were given banned objects to pass on to prisoners, the reports said. The sting by police and the state Department of Corrections began in September. The officers were named as Miami residents Andre J. Morgan, Bryant Stephens and William Traber, and Hialeah resident Rodolfo A. Perez. An employee of the city of Florida City, Larry Carlisle, was also arrested in the sting for allegedly helping to bring contraband to prisoners. The five face charges that include bribery, unlawful compensation and introduction of contraband into a correctional facility. The four officers were being held in a county jail, but Perez was posting bail, jail spokeswoman Janelle Hall said. Hall had no record of Carlisle and did not know if any of the defendants had lawyers. |
