FLORIDA - As lawmakers get set to vote on the state's budget today, including money for the state prison system, one item on the list of cuts won't be the Martin County Correctional Institution in Indiantown. Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Jim McDonough recommended shutting down the facility on Allapattah Road last month and sending the 1,400 inmates to other prisons, a move that he said would trim $7 million from the state budget. But corrections officials and state Rep. Gayle Harrell, R-Stuart, said that as of Thursday the matter no longer was on the budget proposal and likely won't make it back on this year. Read more.
