| Prison riot attack nets 2 extra years for Canadian inmate |

An inmate from Edmonton Institution in Alberta, Canada whose assault on an officer sparked a major riot that caused $150,000 damage was sentenced last Tuesday to an extra two years in prison. "I find this to be a particularly aggravating offence, in that it was an attack on a peace officer in a prison setting," provincial court Judge Clayton Spence told Raymond Troy Jacobson. Jacobson, 22, tried to enter cellblock E without permission on Feb. 7. He swore at a correctional officer, then took a swing when the officer moved toward him, Crown prosecutor Wade Marke said. As the officer started to push him out of the cellblock, Jacobson grabbed the man's shirt and knocked him to the ground, punching and kicking him for several minutes. The officer was so busy trying to defend himself he could not push the button to activate an emergency alarm. The men were fighting in a space between two locked glass doors, Marke said. Onlookers banged on the glass, but the officer finally managed to subdue Jacobson with a wristlock. "The other inmates continued on a rampage after that, and caused about $150,000 damage to the institution ... tearing up the counters, et cetera." The officer suffered split lips, bruises and broken glasses, but did not require long-term medical care. Jacobson, already serving a two-year sentence for charges including robbery and assault, pleaded guilty to assaulting a peace officer. Prison officials said at the time the scuffle, which started at 4 p.m., led to a six-hour standoff in which 19 inmates on the cellblock refused to return to their cells. |
