| Zoning ordinance challenges probation facility |

MICHIGAN - A Port Huron zoning ordinance change could make it harder for Huron House officials to find a new building in the city. Last week, the Port Huron City Council approved 6-1 the first and second readings of a new zoning ordinance that would more appropriately define specific types of businesses and where they could be located. The Huron House Inc., which would be considered a probation facility under the proposed zoning ordinance, had never been defined before, officials said. The facility, which serves as an alternative sentencing program for felony offenders, currently houses about 45 men in its Military Street facility and about 15 women in a separate facility in the city, said Executive Director Bob Diehl. It allows people to serve part of their jail sentence outside of a jail or prison and do community service work as well. Read more.
