| Escapes down despite high number of prisoners |

SOUTH AFRICA - Escapes from South African prisons had dropped by 93 percent over the past 11 years, Correctional Services Minister Ngconde Balfour said yesterday. Speaking in Queenstown, Balfour said 1244 prisoners escaped from correctional centres in 1995. Last year the number was only 93. This was proof that security at prisons had been improved greatly, and was testimony to corrections officials, whom he described as the “custodians at the forefront of the department’s efforts to break the cycle of crime through professional and ethical conduct”.
