| OpEd: Monitoring needed for frail inmate |

MICHIGAN - After eight months of wrangling in federal court, the Michigan Department of Corrections has a green light to close Southern Michigan Correctional Facility in Jackson and transfer the remaining 600 inmates -- all chronically ill and disabled -- to other institutions. The care of those medically fragile inmates will no longer be subject to federal oversight; given MDOC's past performance, the Legislature or governor should appoint an ombudsman or medical monitor to ensure their safety and continuity of care. Independent oversight of the system ended when the Legislature's Corrections Ombudsman Office closed in 2003. Read more.
