Corrections officers with the Brevard County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office stopped an inmate who was apparently trying to commit suicide at the county's jail.
Samuel Jackson, 24, had tied a blanket to a window grate in cell 302 when other inmates alerted officers who responded immediately last Tuesday morning.
.The incident occurred just before 9 a.m., according to sheriff's spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez. She said that when officers entered Jackson's cell, he was standing on the bottom bunk in front of the window grate and was trying to tie a piece of his blanket around his neck. The other end was already tied to the window grate.
Jackson was escorted out of his cell and taken to the medical area where he was checked for injuries. The nurse reported the inmate was not harmed.
Jackson was then taken to the 200-pod where he will be put on direct watch. No use of force was necessary during this incident, Martinez said.
Jackson has been jailed since Jan. 4 for a fugitive warrant from Georgia involving charges of aggravated sexual battery, child molestation and kidnapping.
He is also being held on a warrant from Broward County, on charges of lewd and lascivious acts on a person under 16.
