PENNSYLVANIA - With a potential cost in the tens of millions of dollars, a solution for Northampton County's overcrowded prison promises to be an expensive bricks-and-mortar decision for county officials. But dealing with the space crunch now presents a financial strain as well, albeit with fewer places to the left of the decimal point. Prison food is one example, though a single meal cost of just more than 97 cents can be deceiving. With the inmate population running about 100 inmates over its capacity of 819, that works out to an extra $291 a day (three meals), or $8,730 a month. Read more.
