| Op-Ed: Make state safer place to live |

IOWA - Iowans are safer as a result of the Legislature's bipartisan efforts to improve public safety during the 2007 session. Several measures were passed to make our state a safer place for citizens of all ages. We approved a new offender tracking system called IowaVINE. This system gives crime victims and other interested people greater peace of mind by allowing them to track the whereabouts of offenders who've been arrested or convicted. The Legislature also expanded efforts to monitor sex offenders by hiring 16 new corrections employees to supervise, electronically monitor and treat sex offenders. In addition, we hired three new agents at the Department of Criminal Investigation who track down predators and work to prevent exploitation of our children. Read more.
