| New Zealand struggles with staffing issues |

NEW ZEALAND - The Department of Corrections is beset with serious staffing problems, National Party justice and corrections spokesman Simon Power said. Mr Power released figures obtained under the Official Information Act which showed 165 corrections employees (or 2.4 per cent of the department's staff) were investigated in 2006/07, up from 115, or 1.9 per cent, in 2005/06. The figures also showed 155 corrections officers resigned in 2006/07 – a year characterised by allegations of corruption, and negative fallout over the death of Auckland teenager Liam Ashley while being transported to prison in a security van contracted by the department.
