| Feds bring charges in prison food scheme |

OREGON - Former Oregon prison system food manager Fred Monem remained a fugitive Monday -- the same day his wife was arraigned on federal charges accusing the Salem couple of taking more than $1.2 million in kickbacks and bribes from food vendors. An innocent plea was entered on behalf of Karen Monem, who was allowed to remain free. Monem, 44, quietly answered yes when U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Coffin asked her if she understood the charges against her. She declined comment outside the courtroom. Karen and Fred Monem, 48, were named as co-defendants Friday in a federal grand jury indictment accusing them of bribery, conspiracy, money laundering, mail fraud, wire fraud and interstate travel in aid of racketeering.
