The shutdown of an inmate transfer center is forcing Albuquerque police officers to take time away from patrolling streets to drive inmates to the detention center 20 miles from downtown Albuquerque. The Albuquerque-Bernalillo County transfer center, which held inmates until they could be bused to the Metropolitan Detention Center, closed Tuesday after eight months. Before then, police had the option of driving suspects to the jail or transfer center, depending on which was closer, city public safety director Nick Bakas said. Bakas said the transfer center was never meant to be permanent since it sat on private property that was for sale. "It was working fine," he said. "But we've got to evaluate the process." The city will evaluate the transfer center over the next few months to see whether it's needed and what services it could provide and compare it to having officers drive inmates to the jail, Bakas said. The center was used to hold inmates and begin their booking paperwork before they were taken by bus to the jail. Six officers ran the center on each of the three days a week it was open. Bakas said it sometimes held more than 50 inmates. |
