Court to improve jail diversion

MICHIGAN - The 8th Circuit Court has a new alternative for felony criminal defendants with mental health issues in Ionia and Montcalm counties with the Mental Health Court (HC). The MHC is the brainchild of 8th Circuit Court Judge David Hoort and is designed to improve the jail diversion program by bringing together several local agencies to focus on helping defendants who suffer from mental illness.

“The biggest thing is that we're trying to make jail diversion more of a group effort,” Hoort said. “We'll sit down and in a group effort discuss what we can do to try to keep the person from re-offending, to keep them involved in mental health counseling and to keep them under supervision.” Read more.
