OREGON - It is extremely disappointing to see the Oct. 23 story about the attack on an Oregon State Penitentiary employee using the archaic phrase "prison guard." The only place you'll find such "guards" today are in B movies. The men and women who oversee state prison inmates are professional corrections officers. Our union led the fight in the 1980s to make sure corrections officers were properly trained by the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training long before that was the norm in Oregon.
