Email appeals allowed for capital cases

TEXAS - The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals decided Tuesday to allow emergency e-mail appeals in death penalty cases, rather than requiring attorneys to physically file the paperwork at the court.

The decision comes less than two weeks after hundreds of the state's top defense attorneys filed a petition asking the court to allow the electronic pleadings. Under the rules adopted, attorneys still must bring the printed petition to the court by 9:30 a.m. the next morning. Read more.
