| Jail needs are growing |

KANSAS - The ground breaking for an expanded county jail last week was hardly a time for celebration. By the time the 554-bed, $60.3 million unit is opened, now scheduled for the summer of 2009, it is expected to be full. Sadly, the county cannot build detention facilities fast enough to accommodate a rapidly growing inmate population. The positive in the project: The additional beds will reduce the number of inmates boarded out in jails across the state of Kansas, and the multimillion-dollar expense caused by the shortage of space in county facilities.
