The U.S. Dept of Veterans Affairs provides support, medical care and other benefits to the 70 million people in the U.S. who are potentially eligible for benefits and services because they are veterans, family members or survivors of veterans. This benefits system began as early as 1636, when the Plymouth Colony Pilgrims were at war with the Pequot Indians. The Pilgrims passed a law that ensured disabled soldiers would be supported by the colony. In 1789, the first U.S. Congress passed a law to provide pensions to disabled veterans and their dependents. |
