MAINE - When Gov. John Baldacci first unveiled his plan to create a unified corrections system by combining Maine’s county jails and state prisons in August, he was met with a healthy dose of skepticism and criticism from around the state. In Aroostook County, it is no different. More than two months after first hearing of the plan, County officials and some area legislators remain leery of Baldacci’s plan, a proposal which the governor says is designed to combat overcrowding, reduce costs and improve consistency.
