| Ministers urge ending two-for-one deals |

CANADA - Provincial justice ministers called yesterday for an end to the common judicial practice of granting convicted offenders two-for-one credit for time served in pretrial custody. The ministers presented a united front to press the federal government to address a practice that some say leaves the system open to abuse, as those in jail on remand could deliberately delay the judicial process to effectively shorten an eventual sentence. "Some have suggested that the extended credit given for predisposition detention encourages people to stay at the remand stage longer before they plead or go to trial," Ontario Attorney-General Chris Bentley said. "I think it's a very complex issue but certainly Ontario's position has been that we should reduce the amount of predisposition credit and there is unanimity around the provincial table." Read more.
