| Jail phone law may trample rights |

EDMONTON, CANADA - Alberta inmates may have an unwelcome ear on their phone calls after the government introduces a bill later this week to allow electronic monitoring of their conversations. The bill is designed to protect staff, other inmates, victims or potential witnesses from harassment, but civil libertarians are concerned it will trample inmates' rights and provoke a charter challenge. The president of the Alberta Civil Liberties Association believes it is simply an attempt by the government to make inmates' lives harsher. "If there are difficulties with particular inmates there are certainly provisions with the Criminal Code for those communications to be lawfully intercepted," Stephen Jenuth said. Read more.
