ARKANSAS - A new detention center for nonviolent female inmates is expected to open in Fayetteville in the spring, officials said. The Arkansas Department of Community Correction is converting the former Washington County jail into a 170-bed detention center for nonviolent offenders, said Rhonda Sharp, a department spokeswoman. The department has similar centers in Texarkana, Osceola, North Little Rock and Pine Bluff, though only the Pine Bluff center is for women. The centers focus on behavior modification and provide an alternative to a traditional prison sentence, often to those convicted of drug sentences.
