Prisoners injured in van crash |

Several people were injured when a Toronto Court Services van carrying 23 prisoners struck a commercial van on Highway 27. At 7:55 a.m. Monday, a white van was southbound on Highway 27 in the right lane when it veered into the on-ramp lane to Highway 27 from Dixon Rd. to pull a U-turn. The court services van was headed south behind the van and struck it as it did the U-turn, said Constable Mike Petrasek with Traffic Services. The commercial van flipped over. "He didn't see the court vehicle coming ... just not looking in his rear-view mirror," Petrasek said of the driver of the commercial van. The driver is an employee for a woodworking company, he said. This is the second time in a week that a vehicle transporting prisoners was involved in an accident in which inmates were taken to hospital. Last Wednesday, an Ontario Provincial Police prisoner wagon loaded with 13 prisoners hit a van that was going through a red light in Newmarket. In yesterday's accident, 16 people, including a driver and passengers from both vehicles, went to three hospitals. Several were treated for neck and back injuries; one prisoner had a broken jaw and another a concussion, Petrasek said. Others were treated in two ambulance buses on the scene. Nine prisoners were taken straight to court. "If it hadn't been for the court services driver hammering on the brakes and veering off to the side, there could've been an explosion," said Constable Arthur Lane. In Wednesday's accident, two special constables, nine prisoners and the 80-year-old van driver were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A 78-year-old woman, a passenger in the van, is in serious condition. |
