UTAH - On Sept. 23, convicted murderers and Daggett County jail inmates Danny Martin Gallegos and Juan Carlos Diaz-Arevalo slipped through an unlocked back door, climbed a fence and escaped. They were captured six days later in Wyoming. The escape highlighted deficiencies at the jail, including a lack of guards and an extra fence that had not been installed. Gallegos and Diaz-Arevalo were housed in the jail as part of a program that allows county jails to house state inmates. The Daggett County jail is tethering some kitchen knives and writing an emergency plan, but a federal inspection gave a largely favorable review to the jail where two killers escaped in September.
