Convicted sniper moved to Va. death row

Convicted sniper John Allen Muhammad was transferred without incident from a Northern Virginia jail to death row Thursday, according to a spokesman for the Virginia Department of Corrections.
Muhammad was convicted of two counts of capital murder in the fall for his role in the sniper attacks that left 10 dead and three wounded in October 2002. A Virginia judge sentenced Muhammad to death last week and set an execution date of Oct. 14 -- a date that will be delayed by appeals.
Muhammad had been held since November 2002 at the jail in Prince William County, Va., except for the six weeks he was on trial in Virginia Beach. He joins 27 other inmates on Virginia's death row in Waverly.
"He is in secured custody in our facility," said corrections department spokesman Larry Traylor.
Muhammad could be moved from death row to another facility if he is tried by other jurisdictions in Virginia. He could next face trial in Fairfax.
