WASHINGTON - As the water rose up the steps of the Lewis County Jail in Chehalis, Chief Chandra Wrzesinski had a plan to move inmates to an unused jail in Cowlitz County. But, with routes cut off by floodwaters, she decided to tough it out, moving nearly 200 inmates to the upper tiers of the facility. An estimated 3 feet of water filled the “sally port” where patrol cars normally pull in to drop off arrestees. Inmates and staff had spent Monday filling 1,000 sand bags, and piled them outside to protect the facility, and inside the door to the sally port entrance. Cooks prepared meals to last through lunch on Tuesday before they went home and corrections officers who started shifts at 6 a.m. on Monday stayed the night, she said. “We were four inches away from taking water this morning,” Wrzesinski said on Tuesday |
