| Calif. leads nation in crowding |

CALIFORNIA - One in 31 Americans — more than 7.2 million — is now locked up, on parole or on probation, said two federal Bureau of Justice Statistics reports released Thursday. The nation also now has a record number of parolees and probationers — more than 5 million, said the bureau's reports, "Prisoners in 2006," and "Probation and Parole in the United States, 2006." The reports show that California's severely overcrowded system is once again leading the nation with the most prison inmates, surpassed only by the entire federal prison system, which housed more than 193,000 people last year.
