INDIANA - The commission that sets federal sentencing guidelines will now be deciding whether to apply new guidelines for crack cocaine crimes retroactively. The vote by the U.S. Sentencing Commission will come one day after the Supreme Court upheld more lenient sentences imposed by judges who rejected federal sentencing guidelines as too harsh. Applying the guidelines retroactively could cut prison time for as many as 19,500 federal inmates convicted of crack crimes. Read more.
