| Prison muster eases |

NEW ZEALAND - The Government has been under pressure over the bulging prison muster which has led to inmates being housed in police and court cells. It has also led to policy changes aimed at reducing the rapidly growing prison population. But Corrections Minister Phil Goff revealed today the number of inmates had dropped to 7828, leaving 1122 spare beds in the prison system. He said despite the population spiking earlier in the year it had now come back close to Justice Ministry forecasts. He said there were no prisoners currently in court cells and it was wrong to characterize inmate numbers as a crisis. Read more.
