| Op-Ed: Time to fund programs that work |

VERMONT - On Nov. 18, The Times Argus ran a front page article about "one of the state's greatest challenges" – achieving the goals of the Department of Corrections in a cost-effective manner. A week later, another front page article ("Vermonters help offenders find their way," Nov. 26) described the work of the restorative re-entry programs operated by Community Justice Centers in Vermont. The good news is that the re-entry programs described in the second article provide a cost-effective, safety-enhancing means of transitioning people out of jails, a priority identified by the Department of Corrections. The bad news is that while these community-based re-entry programs are demonstrating their ability to help former inmates live safely and successfully in the community, the funding necessary to keep the programs operational will disappear in a month.
