| Arroyo relieves Bureau of Corrections chief |

PHILIPPINES - President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has relieved the head of the Bureau of Corrections following the controversy surrounding the unauthorized release of former Congressman Romeo Jalosjos from the National Biliibid Prison in Muntinlupa last December 22, Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez said. Replacing Ricardo Dapat is former Philippine National Police chief Oscar Calderon, Gonzalez said Wednesday. In MalacaƱang, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita told a news conference that the decision to relieve Dapat was made after a "wide-ranging" investigation on the incident. Read more.
