ALABAMA - Poor security and cheap locks at a Brewton jail are cited in a federal lawsuit filed by an inmate who was injured during a fight at the jail. Rodney Stewart Presley, 37, blames jailers at the Escambia County Detention Center for what he describes as severe injuries -- including brain damage -- he received while fighting with fellow inmates in June 2006. However, surveillance video appears to show that Presley, a pretrial detainee whose burglary charges ultimately were dismissed, was the aggressor. The video, which an attorney for the county allowed the Press-Register to view, shows Presley striking fellow inmate Ashlion McCants in a gymnasium that had been converted into a living area, the paper reported Wednesday.
