NEW ZEALAND - The National Party says the Department of Corrections is spending more than $1.5 million a month on consultants. National's Corrections spokesperson, Simon Power, says the department paid consultants $19.4 million between 2006 and 2007, almost twice what it spent the year before. Mr Power says the department's use of consultants is surprising because its internal workforce has grown by 11% and the expertise of these employees should be used. He says Corrections has been criticised for overspending its building budget for four new prisons, so it is extraordinary that so much could be spent on consultants. The department has not been available for comment. Read more. If link has expired, check the website of the article's original news source. |
