NEVADA - Conflicting responses leave questions about who made a decision to have a dead Ely State Prison inmate cremated without an autopsy. The Department of Corrections is saying White Pine County is responsible after the American Civil Liberties Union raised questions about the failure to do autopsies on two inmates who died in 2006. The Ely Times obtained a copy of a Dec. 20 letter signed by four ACLU staff attorneys to Nevada Department of Corrections Director Howard Skolnik questioning the director about the two deaths. The letter followed a teleconference meeting on Dec. 14 between ACLU attorneys and Skolnik that addressed alleged deficiencies in medical care at Ely State Prison. Read more.
