NEW ZEALAND - The National Party said the figure was a sign of bed shortages and mismanagement of inmate numbers. But Corrections says its prison muster is now at a low and below forecast for the first time in years, though inmates will still need to be housed in police cells during "regional peaks". Figures issued under the Official Information Act show sentenced and remand inmates spent 23,734 bed nights in police cells in the 2006-07 financial year at a cost of $190 a night. Police were reimbursed $4.4 million by Corrections for looking after the department's overflow prisoners during a time when the national prison muster was close to capacity. Read more.
