| Work crews return remains in limbo |

MICHIGAN - Several local communities that have relied on state prison work crews bargain-rate for clean-up, fix-up work will likely be waiting a few months yet before the program is reinstated. State Rep. Gary McDowell (D-Rudyard) today said the promised return of prisoner work details depends heavily on how quickly Upper Peninsula prisons fill about 180 [officer] vacancies. McDowell said the prisons are not able to furnish [officers] for the prisoner crews without paying very expensive overtime costs that the state Corrections Department is bound to avoid. Read more.
