INDIA - Within weeks of prisoners rioting in Patna's Beur jail, which itself closely followed the daring prison break by the Maoists in Raipur, yet another serious incident occurred in the overcrowded Jalandhar central jail on Monday when jail inmates set several buildings inside its premises on fire and all but captured the prison for the better part of the day. The jail inmates, who began protests early in the morning demanding better amenities, went berserk after they heard that the hair of a Sikh prisoner Jaswinder Singh — an undertrial in a bootlegging case — had been forcibly snipped by cops. In the ensuing violence, one convict was shot at and several others were injured. The prison houses 1,500 prisoners whereas it has a capacity of just 500. Read more.
