A former Mass. Corrections Officer was convicted last week in federal court of distributing marijuana, OxyContin, and other drugs to inmates at the Suffolk County House of Correction's South Bay facility. Peter J. Lawless, 27, of 1161 Washington St., Norwood, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute, and possession with intent to distribute, marijuana, OxyContin, and Klonopin, and two counts of distribution of marijuana. At last week's plea hearing, prosecutors said in the summer of 2002, Lawless arranged to smuggle packages containing various controlled substances into South Bay and to provide the drugs to inmates at South Bay. In particular, on July 18, 2002, and July 31, 2002, Lawless brought marijuana into the South Bay facility on behalf of inmates, said prosecutors. Lawless, who is scheduled to be sentenced on July 19, faces up to 20 years' imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, and a $1 million fine on the conspiracy charge. He faces up to five years' imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000 on the marijuana distribution charges. The case was investigated jointly by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney John J. Farley of Sullivan's Public Corruption and Special Prosecutions Unit. |
