SOUTH DAKOTA - Work on a new prison could start in the spring of 2009 in Rapid City. That from Tim Reisch (RYSH), South Dakota's Corrections secretary. An environmental study is being done on a 30-acre plot near the landfill. Reisch says if no serious problems arise, officials will get cost estimates and ask the Legislature for the money. The Corrections secretary says the new prison would bring geographic balance. One-third of all state prison system inmates come from the Black Hills area, but the state prisons for men are in southeastern South Dakota. Read more.
