Jail won't take parole violators

NEW MEXICO - The Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center will no longer accept prisoners who have committed technical violations of their parole. The county sent a letter last month to the state Corrections Department, notifying the agency of the new policy that is to begin Tuesday. The policy is aimed at cutting costs and saving space.

The county contends that technical parole violators are the responsibility of the facility that released them. Technical violations involve a parolee breaking rules such as using drugs or missing meetings with a parole officer. Read more.
